A Glimpse Into Social Media at the Smithsonian (And Beyond)

On Wednesday, September 3rd from 12.30 to 1.30 in the National Air and Space Museum Briefing Room, Francesca De Gottardo, our #svegliamuseo founder and visiting professional working with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), will be presenting the results of her research project on Social Media at the Smithsonian.

Over the summer, Francesca worked with Heather Foster Shelton, Robbie Davis, and Tiffany Ruhl of SITES, as well as with Elizabeth Bugbee and Katie Taylor of Smithsonian Affiliations, and “took a picture” of how social media are currently being used in museums around DC and beyond.

She interviewed many social media managers asking them about their goals, approach to analytics and measurements of the results and SM advertising. She also assessed the online presence of 35 museums across the United States which are both Affiliates and/or SITES venues. Finally, she conducted a survey for the public (with a sample of 300 participants!) to understand their perceptions of museums’ social media presence.

The main goal of this research is to inform the creation of a “toolkit” that will help smaller museums across the country and Smithsonian affiliates that are just learning to use social media.
